SHANDONG UNIVERSITY OF ART AND DESIGN

    Shandong University of Art and Design, established in 1973, is one of 31 art and design academies in China. It is situated in the historically famous city, Ji'nan. Nearby to the south is Mount Tai, and to the north is Yellow River. During the past thirty years, Shandong University of Art and Design has put first priority on the art disciplines, at the same time placing importance on liberal and scientific disciplines as its two supporting wings, with the goal of fostering “scientific spirit, humanistic accomplishment, artistic innovation, and technical skills”.

    Shandong University of Art and Design (SUAD) is a close association of 11 schools: the Schools of Visual Communication Design; Architecture and Landscape Design; Industrial Design; Fashion Design; Fine Arts; Digital Art and Communication; Modern Handicraft Art; Arts and Humanities; Applied Design; Further Education; and Common Courses. It offers 16 undergraduate degree programs in art and design, art and design study, fine arts, advertising, photography, animation, film and television, painting, sculpture, industrial design, fashion design, architecture, fashion show, package engineering, editing and publication, and urban planning, covering 51 areas of specialization. Three master’s degree programs are offered in art, art and design, and fine arts.

    Shandong University of Art and Design is equipped with advanced facilities for teaching and research. It is comprised of a library, Educational Technology Center, Art Gallery, Sun Changlin Museum, Chinese Folk Art Research Institute, Furniture Research Institute, Image Art Research Institute and etc. The Museum has a rich collection of more than 10,000 pieces of calligraphy, painting, ceramics, and folk art works in different historical periods. Presently, the university has built the Comprehensive Studio Center, Digital Art and Communication Studio Center, and Special Arts and Crafts Studio Center, where there are more than 20 different studios, respectively devoted to book binding and layout design, printing, packaging technology, advertising design, architecture and landscape model, model processing, mural painting, artwork preservation, fiber and dyeing, fashion design and engineering, metalsmithing, jewelry, ceramics, glass, liquor, computer graphics, animation, photography, multimedia technology and furniture design. Shandong University of Art and Design issues “Shandong University of Art and Design Newspaper” and its journal called “Art of Design”.

    SUAD faculty members, in addition to teaching, devote themselves to research and artistic production, thereby receiving a wide variety of prizes. For example, in the Tenth National Fine Art Exhibition in 2004, acceptance rate of works designed by SUAD faculty members and students is 10.27%. In addition, they received two silver prizes, eight bronze prizes, and five excellent prizes, which made SUAD one of the best universities and colleges of art and design in China. In order to integrate education with social practice, Shandong University of Art and Design has undertaken different design projects and organized various academic activities. For instance, in June 2006 SUAD participated in Shandong International Cultural Industry Fair, designing the Fair logo, digital mascot, and standard statue of Confucius. In September 2006 SUAD undertook the Ji’nan International Contemporary Photo Biennale and the first World University Student Photography Exhibition.

    Shandong University of Art and Design has vigorously expanded its international ties and cooperation with foreign universities and institutes. This has established friendly relationship with universities and colleges of art and design in America, Australia, Europe, Japan and Korea. Shandong University of Art and Design, in May 2005, became a member of Cumulus (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design, and Media) and this has functioned to further develop the university’s international role and collaboration with its foreign counterparts.
